Should I become a model? Do I have what it takes?
Maybe! But beware, it is a tough and often short career.
Primary modeling markets often demand young, skinny looks that, paradoxically, are not particularly attractive. Secondary markets cater for a much broader range of looks and ages. To be versatile, to be able to alter your looks to match the client requirements, is a useful skill here.
In addition to being flexible you will be expected to work well with the ponytails: photographers, art directors etc. They need to work quickly and efficiently within a budget. The more experience you have, the more you will be able to anticipate their requirements. It helps to find out as much as you can about how to model; how to pose for a photographer and so on. This is where your easy going, pleasant personality and professionalism is important, not just your looks.
Finally you need to promote yourself. This is where this site, modelarc.com will come in useful to you. You can promote yourself here. You will probably need to find a full blown agency too, make sure it is reputable!
There are many kinds of modeling, but there are two main categories: fashion and glamour.
Fashion
The fashion industry tend to hire female models of age 18-25 (modeling is rarely a lifetime career) and between 5'8'' and 6' in height and male models 6' or over. They expect models to be slim (dress size 10) with clear complexion and good teeth. You need to be professional, reliable and committed. The going is tough, so you need to persevere, concentrate, and put up with much boredom at times.
Glamour
The glamour industry is less fussy in its demands. Work may vary from glossy magazine covers to sex mags. Much glamour work requires topless or nude work. Be particularly aware of safety issues: safety tips!
